2022 Spring Release

Spring is upon us, and with it comes an opportunity for us to reflect. After an extremely challenging 2020 (not just for MDC), 2021 was a vintage of renewed hope. The 2021 vintage was particularly special for the winery, as we welcomed our first two full-time harvest interns and employees and began sharing the space with our old friend Dani Rozman and his harvest crew from La Onda. The juxtaposition of the solitary and morose 2020 vintage to the vibrant and hectic 2021 is a stark one, and the wines show it. This is our largest harvest ever, and we are really excited to share the wines of our collective work.

2021 ‘Buckaroos’ Rosé of Zinfandel
Stampede Vineyard, Clements Hills

On August 13th, we picked our second vintage of rosé from the ancient vines at the Stampede Vineyard in Clements Hills, at 22 brix. We couldn't be happier with how the wine turned out. Pressed whole-cluster and fermented in stainless steel, the wine is everything you want California rosé to be. At only 12.7% alcohol, the wine has loads of acidity, but with the charm and vivacity you'd expect from old vine Zinfandel. Drink now and drink often. This wine embodies springtime.

2020 Ellison Reserve Sauvignon Blanc
Sonoma Mountain

At only one barrel, this is one of the tiniest lots we've ever made. When conditions are exactly right, this 51 year old Sauvignon Blanc vineyard on Sonoma Mountain develops a beautiful botrytis that we leave on the vine to ripen beyond the initial harvest. We only produce this wine in the best vintages. For this vineyard, 2020 was exactly that. Whole cluster fermented in a single open top fermenter, this is without a doubt the most special bottling of the release. Our team will be drinking this wine at Thanksgiving, so make sure to keep a bottle handy for your holidays.

2021 Red Table Wine
Sonoma Mountain

This wine was designed from the beginning to be a delicious summer red. The blend of Grenache, Zinfandel and Cabernet is driven primarily by Grenache from the Abba vineyard in the Jahant AVA of Lodi. It’s a juicy and vibrant light red. Buy a case and drink it slightly chilled. Open it for no other reason than “it’s Tuesday.” It is a core MDC belief that wine is a condiment on the nightly dinner table, and this wine is the perfect embodiment of that ethos.

2020 Stampede Zinfandel
Stampede Vineyard, Clements Hills

The Stampede Vineyard has been core to the lineup since the very beginning. This is our seventh vintage of this wine, and it is a perfect representation of what we are going for when making this wine. Picked on the 23rd of August and fermented half whole cluster in open top fermenters, this wine is textbook Stampede Zinfandel. Notes of peach yogurt and bramble but with that signature salty, savory tannin unique to this special vineyard.
Great to drink now, but also great to age for 5-7 years.
