2021 Spring Release

For all the challenges of 2020, the silver lining is this amazingly delicious & charming Buckaroos Rosé of Zinfandel from the ancient vines at Stampede. When the wine is in the glass, it's a cacophony of gas station candy - think peach rings, gummy candy & watermelon Jolly Ranchers, but with a backbone of wet rocks & tart spring leafy greens.

We are also releasing our second-ever skin fermented Herron Sauvignon Blanc Reserve (a la Scholium Project’s “Prince in His Caves”). The wine we made in 2014 was outstanding, but in the years between, either the low yields or overall conditions kept us from producing another skin fermented Herron until 2019. Immediately poured into the glass, it's Guava & Papaya seeds, but as the wine opens up, a brooding side of dried Herbs de Provence & Calvados take center stage.

Surprise of surprises, we have TWO Cabernets to offer. Our second vintage of Massa Cabernet Sauvignon was another opportunity for us to keep pulling at the string of making Cabernet in a “pre-Prohibition” style & we were really looking to pick this vineyard when we thought it was “al dente”, just like draining your pasta when it still has a nice hearty bite to it. Pomegranate molasses, Lydecker plum & pasilla pepper on the nose. The tannins are shockingly fine for cool-fermented mountain Cabernet, bolstered by bright currant & nectarine pit on the palate.

The second, Gala Cabernet Sauvignon, comes from a pair of dear friends who we met in New York in 2018. Their six-acre terraced Cabernet vineyard overlooks the town of Napa, in the mountains between Atlas Peak & Coombsville. The Gala Vineyard was converted from organic to biodynamic farming in 2018 & is tended by hand. This wine displays the charm & intensity of mountain Cabernet from the Napa Valley: red licorice, golden raspberries & Sassafras greet you in the glass, with ripe blackberry juice, licorice & Sarsaparilla - all of the classic traits of Vaca Mountain Cabernet.
